Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE)

What kind of exam is it? This exam tests general language competency at Upper Intermediate level. It tests your reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
What level do I need to be? Upper Intermediate
How will it help me? The most well known English Language examination. widely accepted by employers world-wide. Tests skills of reading, writing listening and speaking.
What does the exam consist of? There are 5 papers, taken on three separate days; papers 1-3 are taken on the same day:
  • Paper 1: Reading comprehension (1 hour 15 min.)
  • Paper 2: Writing (1 hours and 30 min.)
  • Paper 3: English in Use (1 hour 15 min.)
  • Paper 4: Listening comprehension (40 min.)
  • Paper 5: Interview (15 min. approx)
How can I prepare for this exam? Frances King offers special Cambridge Examination Courses to prepare students for this exam. You can also use practice tests in the study centre. There is also an exam forum where experienced exam teachers give advice and students can ask questions. This is generally held about 2 weeks before the exam; your teacher will notify you.

Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)

What kind of exam is it? This exam tests your ability to communicate at an advanced level with a practical emphasis. The exam tests your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
What level do I need to be? Advanced
How will it help me? This exam is accepted by employers world-wide and increasingly by universities. Tests skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
What does the exam consist of? There are 5 papers, taken on three separate days; papers 1-3 are taken on the same day:
  • Paper 1: Reading comprehension (1 hour 15 min.)
  • Paper 2: Writing (2 hours)
  • Paper 3: English in Use (1 hour 30 min.)
  • Paper 4: Listening comprehension (45 min.)

Cambridge Proficiency Examination (CPE)

What kind of exam is it? The Proficiency is the highest of the Cambridge ESOL exams. It tests your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills at a very advanced level.
What level do I need to be? Advanced
How will it help me? This exam is accepted by universities and accepted as an English language teaching qualification in some countries. Tests skills of reading , writing, listening and speaking.
What does the exam consist of? There are 5 papers, taken on three separate days; papers 1-3 are taken on the same day:
  • Paper 1: Reading comprehension (1 hour 30 min.)
  • Paper 2: Writing (2 hours)
  • Paper 3: English in Use (1 hour 30 min.)
  • Paper 4: Listening comprehension (40 min.)

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

What kind of exam is it? This American examination tests general competence in academic English. Students take the examination on the Internet at test centres around the world. We advise students to register in advance of their course at  www.ets.org/toefl or by telephone +31 320 239 540, to be sure of their preferred date. Payment is by credit card.
What level do I need to be? Upper Intermediate

How will it help me? It is accepted for entry to US and some UK universities. Generally universities ask for a score within the range of 70-110.
What does the exam consist of? There are 4 papers, taken on the same day on a computer. Each section is worth 30 points so the highest possible score is 120.
  • Section 1: Reading (60-100 minutes)
  • Section 2: Listening Comprehension (60-90 minutes)
  • Section 3: Speaking (20 minutes)
  • Section 4. Writing - two essays (50 minutes)
How can I prepare for this exam? Frances King offers a choice of 25 or 20-hour TOEFL courses, to prepare students for this exam. You can also use practice tests in the study centre.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

What kind of exam is it? It tests academic skills required for studying at university level in the UK, though students should always check with their intended place of study about entry requirements for specific courses.
What level do I need to be? Upper Intermediate

How will it help me? British universities require IELTS scores ranging from 4.5 for foundation courses and some science subjects to 7.5 / 8 for subjects like Law, as proof of applicants having a sufficient level of English to follow courses.
What does the exam consist of? There are four papers, taken on the same day:
  • Paper 1: Reading (60 min.)
  • Paper 2: Writing (60 min.)
  • Paper 3: Listening (40 min.)
  • Paper 4: Speaking (15 min. approx.)

Test of English for International Communication TOEIC®

What kind of exam is it? TOEIC® is a 200-item multiple choice test with students being awarded a score between 10-990; there is no pass or fail. It measures English language proficiency in the work environment, unlike other exams which focus on English as it is used in an academic environment.
What level do I need to be? Intermediate or above
How will it help me? Multi-national corporations, government agencies, and other public and private organisations use TOEIC® for purposes such as: recruitment, assignment to overseas posts requiring English language proficiency, assignments or promotion within a department where English is needed or desirable, and to identify employees who know English sufficiently well to benefit from corporate training programmes abroad.
What does the exam consist of? There are 2 sections; Listening Comprehension and Reading. Each section contains 100 questions.
How can I prepare for this exam? Frances King offers a special closed course, TOEIC® Preparation Option, to prepare students for this exam. You can also use practice tests in the study centre.

Beginner I do not understand or speak any English
Elementary I can understand and speak basic English in familiar situations
Intermediate I understand and speak quite well in familiar everyday situations
Upper Intermediate 1 I speak well but not fluently in a variety of situations. I can express quite complex ideas, but I find it difficult to understand fast speech of native speakers
Upper Intermediate 2 I feel confident and competent to express ideas on many topics. I only occasionally make mistakes and don't know the correct vocabulary
Advanced 1 I am fluent and confident in expressing myself although I sometimes have problems with more complex ideas or unfamiliar situations
Advanced 2 I speak English fluently and understand almost everything, although I sometimes have difficulty with colloquial English
